End of Life Education
A large part of Death Doula work is education. Death is the great unknown. Many people are afraid of death.
Many people are in denial about death. Doulas help people face their fears by providing information that creates confidence and courage to face the inevitable. Doulas educate us so we can make peace with death, explore our fears and concerns, get answers to difficult questions and prepare to rest in peace.
If we leave it to our families to handle things when we die, we are creating an extra burden for them in addition to the grief and loss they'll be experiencing. Doulas help people create a plan for dying, for their deathbed atmosphere, for dying at home or in hospice, who will be with us, what comfort measures do we want.
Doulas assist with funerals, celebrations of life, memorial services and legacy planning. Doulas answer questions such as how to handle the body, cremation or burial, home funeral or funeral home, green burial, shrouds, biodegradable coffins or traditional, embalming or not, and much more. Our loved ones need to know where to find documents they will need when we are not there to tell them. They need to know our wishes for the end of life and where to find this information when we are no longer able to explain.
How we die is important for us and for our survivors. Planning helps us die in peace to rest in peace.
